How big is big enough? Energy consumption, cleaning and maintenance are a function of size.
For near and out of the way places, challenges in terms of quality & cost savings can sometimes be met by using prefabricated elements. Although full systems -entire houses, are available these are often not cost effective and hybrid versions incorporating prefabricated elements such as panels and modules can be a good solution. Below is a competition project from 2009 for a group of accessible Beachuts, this proposed to use engineered timber technology (in panels) to construct a small space in a somewhat unlikely location. A combination of different shutters allow the structure to, open for views and use but, be completely closed down for security and weather protection when not in use.
